Our story
Great food, good people, and a whole lot of history.
Out of the Blue started with a French couple, a love for Sydney, and a dream of doing things their own way.
Jean Marc and Sophie Gubian arrived from France in 1986 and quickly fell for the Australian way of life. After ten years working as a chef at a popular Bondi seafood restaurant, Jean Marc decided it was time to open a place of his own.
And so, Out of the Blue was born.
The original little fish and chip shop opened on Clovelly Road (where Bendigo Bank is now!). It was fish and chips with a French twist, and the locals loved it.
Five years later, the lease came to an end. But in 2001, an empty shop just down the road gave Jean Marc and Sophie another shot. With their life savings on the line and plenty of hard work, they built the OTB you know and love today.
The rest, as they say, is Clovelly history.
Over the years, OTB has become a local institution. A place where regulars know their orders by heart, kids stop by after a swim, and hungry beachgoers discover what all the fuss is about.
Today, their eldest son Julien is helping carry the family business into its next chapter, bringing fresh ideas, plenty of heart, and the same dedication that started it all.
Still family-run. Still proudly Clovelly. Still serving up the good stuff.
From our family to yours, thanks for being part of the story.
Quality
Great food starts with great ingredients. Simple as that.
We're big believers in making things from scratch, never cutting corners on flavour or quality. From our homemade sauces to bread baked fresh daily by local bakers, it's the little things that make a big difference.
We've worked with trusted suppliers for years, choosing quality ingredients and sourcing sustainably wherever we can, while keeping the good stuff affordable.
Sustainability
Great food shouldn't come at the expense of our oceans.
Being so close to the beach, looking after our oceans is something we care about. That's why we're doing our bit to reduce waste and cut back on single-use plastics.
We've swapped plastic bags, straws and cutlery for more environmentally friendly alternatives. Bringing your own bag? Even better! Otherwise, we've got paper bags and cardboard boxes ready for your order.
Small changes, but we reckon they make a big difference.
Community
Locals aren't just our customers. They're part of the family.
We're a family-run business, and Clovelly is our home. We love the familiar faces, the post-swim burger runs, and getting to know the people who keep coming back.
We do our best to cater to different dietary needs, too. Got an allergy or special request? Have a chat with us and we'll see what we can do.
Whether you're enjoying OTB by the beach or recovering on the couch, tag us in your photos, say hello, and share the love.
After all, you're the reason we're here.
